As an adult I needed something more than the childish songs in my lesson books. This fits the bill. I am beyond first book, but not quite through second book lessons....

I'm in the late-beginner stage and found this book to be perfect for me. All of the pieces are really enjoyable. I'm going through the pieces in order, and find the difficulty level and progression to be just right.I'm only giving it 4/5 stars for two main reasons:1. The tempo markings are waaay too fast, especially for a beginner. Granted, I've only made it 1/3 of the way through the book, but nearly every piece has a tempo marking that is unachievable for me, and would even sound rushed if I heard it played perfectly by a world-class pianist. My advice - pick a tempo that sounds good to you, and aim for that.2. Minor nitpick, but I would prefer the original markings with mordents and trills as opposed to being "written out", like this book does.
I love this book because I love Bach! The book has a good selection of Bach pieces. Book I has 16 early intermediate level pieces, and Book II has 12 more difficult pieces. The quality of the paper, printing, and binding is high quality, so I expect this book to last for a long time. I also like that each piece identifies a skill that is developed in learning that piece; for example, the first piece is "a study in accent and in the correct timing of half-beats." No. 12 is "a study in contrasts of touch and independence of each hand."
A great introduction to Bach; I've been using this book with all students, all ages, for years. They can move on to the 2- and 3-part inventions and the preludes and fugues after this. Superb training in articulation, phrasing, rhythm, balance between the hands -- and all in one book.
I played piano for 10+ years as a child into my early teens, but quit and hadn't touched a key in almost 15 years. I wanted to pick it back up again but couldn't even read music anymore, so I was somewhere between a beginner and a former intermediate player. Luckily I picked back up and some of the skills came back to me quickly, and this book has been an integral part of my relearning. It's challenging but not impossible for someone of my skill level and has a good variety of techniques that it focuses on. Recommend.
It has some great pieces in it that aren't too difficult, and I am using it to improve my mediocre piano ability.
I took piano lessons all throughout my formative years from a very knowledgeable and gifted classical pianist so I was mainly taught in the classical style. I didn't have regular access to a piano as an adult until recently when my mother gave me hers. I bought this book hoping to brush up on my skills and it's been very enjoyable to work on these pieces. They are rather basic, but still challenging for someone who hasn't played in a while. Lots of familiar tunes but plenty of new ones that I've come to love. I'm looking forward to the day when I can sit at the piano and play the entire book from start to finish.
this a great book for 2nd year pianists and up.. it has a lot of great pieces in it some are long and some short these pieces take a great amount of practice and patience, a good hour or better depending on your level of playing .I have been playing piano for ten years and I have added this book as part of my 2 hour practice time..well worth the money and time.
